Who We Are
Our Mission
As the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Flagstaff, we accept the life and teaching of Jesus Christ as a way of establishing a covental relationship with God, with one another, and with all of God’s creation.
As an Open and Affirming congregation, we reach out to welcome all who wish to join in a spiritual journey based on a Christian tradition, attentive to the Word of God. We respect diversity among us and honor different theological and philosophical traditions.
In an atmosphere of inclusion and care, we seek to create an extended church family, nurturing individual spiritual development of members and friends of all ages. We serve as a positive force for wider community care, peace, social justice and other forms of responsible stewardship.
Open and Affirming
We, the congregation of First Congregational United Church of Christ of Flagstaff, declare ourselves to be Open and Affirming. With God’s grace, we seek to be a congregation that includes all persons, embracing differences of sexual orientation, gender, marital status, age, mental and physical ability, as well as racial, ethnic, or social-economic background. We welcome all to share fully in the life, leadership, ministry, fellowship, worship, sacraments, responsibilities, and blessings of participation in our congregation.
Church Commissions
Activities are organized by various church commissions that include:
Spiritual Life Commission – Supervises the worship life of the church, including the music program
Education Commission – Oversees the nursery for children up to 2 years of age, Sunday school, youth programs and adult education programs. We invite children to join us in our worship service. Children ages 2 to 6 stay in the service until after our children’s message called “Chime Time.” A teacher then escorts them to the classroom.
Fellowship Commission – Develops fellowship opportunities to nurture the church family and designs programs to welcome and encourage new members. Activities include coffee fellowship after the Sunday service, potlucks, and social events such as hikes, bike rides, films and more.
Community and World Commission – Focuses on the local, national, and international communities. Activities include the management of the special collections during the Sunday service (Heifer International, One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, UNICEF), the collection of food and other items for local charities, and the “Knit Wits, Too” and “Quilts for Kids” groups for a variety of local charitable organizations.
Trustees Commission – Manages the building and grounds of the church
Pastoral Relations Commission – Acts as a liaison between the congregation and the Pastor
